Every year to raise money for the awareness of prostate cancer and give tribute to the singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, benefits are set up to bring together the community.
My name is Joe Ed Coffman and I am with a local organization known as Friends of Fogelberg, conceived to fight prostate cancer in memory of beloved singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg who succumbed to the disease in December of 2007.
The goal of this press release is to give thanks, appreciation and credit to all of those who have helped to make the efforts of Friends of Fogelberg a success. From my musician friends, to the financial donors, to the technical people involved, to the interest of the local media . . . YOU! - All of these have helped us make “Think Blue Too!” a concept whose time has come.
Prostate cancer will affect 1 in 6 men during the course of their lifetime. Early detection is key to defeating this deadly disease.
Performing 3 concerts thus far, Friends of Fogelberg has raised over $100,000 to fight prostate cancer through free screenings, educations and awareness. In 2011, of 300 men who took advantage of our free screening clinic at Harrington Cancer Center, 10 men were “red flagged” suggesting further tests. In 2012, I’m proud to report, we nearly tripled the number of men who took advantage of this simple blood test, known as a P.S.A., that could potentially save their lives. Of the 824 men who took part, 30 were “red flagged.” I can’t help but believe that we are doing good work, but more importantly, saving lives!

September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness month.
On a blue moon, Friends of Fogelberg painted the Cadillac Ranch light blue in an effort to raise awareness about prostate cancer. On September 9th, the Amarillo Globe News was printed on light blue paper, once again to make men aware that they don’t have to die from prostate cancer. These 2 achievements were only made possible by the tireless efforts of the late Dr. Gerald Holman, who devoted his entire life to saving lives. Even in his final days, Dr. Holman lived to see these 2 events and they simply thrilled him, getting the word out to “Think Blue too!” I loved and respected Dr. Holman very much, and he truly enriched my life. He was much loved and is dearly missed.
